“Underland” Book Review in Parabola Magazine

In the Spring 2023 issue of Parabola magazine, I have a book review published of Robert Macfarlane’s Underland. Essentially, I explore this travel memoir as a modern re-envisioning of the Underworld archetypes. Macfarlane manages to include a large number of the symbols that we have long associated with the Underworld in beautiful prose.

About this Publication

Parabola Magazine’s tagline is “The Search for Meaning”. I had a lovely experience publishing in the Spring 2023 issue with the theme of Transformation. Because Parabola is dedicated to how myth, religion and other beliefs help us in our present-day lives, I am hopeful I will have more work to submit to them in the future. I find their articles to be deep, moving, and fascinating.

About this Article

Originally written as my class paper for our Underworld class, this article is a deep book review of Robert MacFarlane’s book Underland, tracing how through his travel memoir, the author created and updated the themes common in underworld myths. The book itself is beautifully written, and it’s not possible to know how many of the underworld motifs were intentionally created by the author, and how many of them were simply expressions of his own turning inward psychologically. I was delighted to update a paper originally written for school and share it with a wider audience.
